Carmen Botín O'Shea was born in Spain to parents, Emilio Botín-Sanz de Sautuola García de los Ríos (father) and Paloma O'Shea Artiñano (mother). 

Her father, Emilio Botín, was the executive chairman of Spain's Grupo Santander whereas her mother was a pianist and the president of The Albeniz Foundation.

Carmen's father died on 10 September 2014.
